We were asked to adapt the garden as new flats would directly overlook it. We aimed to do this with a light touch. The first phase involved screening the view from the windows of the neighbouring building.
Fastigiate trees help shield the views from the neighbours’ upstairs windows towards our clients’ family room. With careful selection and placing, a few trees were enough, and the open feeling of the garden was preserved.

The second phase replaced the existing deck. The new deck was built from durable composite decking boards to open up the house to the garden by removing handrails and unnecessary steps.
The new deck opened up the garden to the living room.
The planter and double step at either side of the entrance deck provide a perch for plants and places to sit.
We used an existing covered garden bench, and we created a curved screen of trellis which reflects the existing circles in the garden. A new pointed archway reflects the pitch of the house roof and helps to define the area behind, which was designed to screen the trampoline from the living room.
The new deck was designed to open the house to the garden, connecting the two areas seamlessly. The deck allows for a living zone and a dining zone.
Planters on either side of the upper part of the deck provide colour and texture close to the house.
